If your version of Windows requires Administrator privileges to install software you will need them to install LINA. If you are running Vista, right-click on the installer icon and select "Run as administrator". Otherwise, just double-click on the installer icon. On Windows 2003 you must also uncheck the box that says "Run this program with restricted access". Click through the installer windows accepting the default locations and responses. The installer may appear to hang or freeze during various phases of the process. The duration of the installation process varies with the speed, memory availability and internet connection speed of your system. On a moderately effiecient system with a decent ethernet connection the LINA installation process takes less than five minutes. When you see the final screen - congratulations! LINA is installed and you are ready to install a LINA application. The minimum system requirements for installing LINA on a PC are an internet connection, approximately 1 GB of disk space, a 1 Ghz processor and 1 GB RAM or better. If you have a previous installation of LINA it must be removed before you can proceed. See "Uninstalling LINA" for complete removal instructions. LINA runs on a VirtualBox VM and IS NOT COMPATIBLE with existing VirtualBox installations. With LINA 1.00beta1, it is necessary that CYGWIN NOT be running during any part of the installation process or while running LINA applications. Please note that when you reinstall LINA you also need to reinstall any applications that you downloaded for LINA. We will soon have a LINA backup service which will allow you to back up and restore your LINA applications and data when you install a new version of LINA or migrate to a new operating system. LINA 1.0beta1 supports Mac OS X 10.4, Tiger, and 10.5, Leopard, on the Intel architecture. Open the zipped DMG file that you downloaded by double-clicking on it if your browser has not opened it already. Once the DMG icon is visible double-click on it and it will usually show up as a mounted installation disk on the Desktop. Note that the icon is often hidded by the original .zip icon. The Installer will ask to run a program to determine if the LINA software can be installed. Please say “yes” and allow it to proceed by clicking the “Continue” button. Click through the resulting install screens. Choosing the default responses works fine and has been thoroughly tested. When the Installer is done, click "Finish" and you are ready to grab some applications from http://www.linasoftware.com/. We recommend 2 GB of RAM for good performance. You will be asked to provide an Admin username/password during installation and to allow LINA to open ports if your firewall is active. Disc space for LINAfied applications will be in addition to the 1 GB needed by LINA Runtime. If you have a previous installation of LINA it must be removed before you can proceed. If you have downloaded the installer via a web browser, you must first make it executable by typing: chmod 777 LINA-for-unix-type-version-x86-32.sh Then type the following at the command line: sudo ./LINA-for-unix-type-version-x86-32.sh Open this LINA disk by double-clicking on it and open the LINA.pkg file by double-clicking on it. It will ask to run a program to determine if the LINA software can be installed. Please say “yes” and Allow it to “Continue” by clicking the “Continue” button. Click through the resulting install screens. Choosing the default responses should work fine. The installer may appear to freeze during various steps of the process. We will address the accuracy of the progress bars in the next release. Once the Installer has completed you are ready to install a LINA application. You will need an internet connection, approximately 250 MB of disk space, and Administrator privileges on the system where you want to install LINA. Before installing LINA 1.00beta1 on Linux, you MUST disable SE Linux. This primarily affects Fedora installs and will not be necessary in the next LINA release. Here is how to disable it using the SELinux configuration file:http://www.crypt.gen.nz/selinux/disable_selinux.html On SLES and OpenSUSE, you will need to edit the sudoers file using /usr/sbin/visudo, and add "!" in front of env_reset and in front of always_set_home.
